Resilience

By Karen Vally on 28 Sep 2017

There is a misconception that resilient people possess an extraordinary gift. Resilience is actually more of a process that can be developed over time by changing our negative thoughts into positive ones, reframing our challenges, modifying our habits and constantly fine-tuning our coping mechanisms. Resilient people are hopeful, calm and believe that every problem has a possible solution. They are able to regulate their emotions which enables them to continue being productive despite their suffering.

Resilient people bounce back more easily because they are confident, have a healthy self-esteem and very often, a well-developed sense of humour. They are open-minded and put things into perspective. They are flexible, adaptable and find it easy to restore a balance in their lives. As a result, they are able to emerge from a crisis stronger and more resourceful. They learn from their mistakes.

But how does one cultivate this innate potential to be resilient? Several studies  on the subject reveal that although one's family life and environment play a part, some children from disadvantaged backgrounds have developed incredible levels of resilience despite the odds being heavily stacked against them. What is apparent is that people who have had good role models in the form of caring and supportive parents and teachers, and who have been given opportunities to solve problems and practise dealing effectively with hurts and disappointments, will most likely have developed some degree of resilience. Being able to regulate one's emotions is a vital component in growing our resilience.

To build our resilience, we need to be acutely aware that both our brains and bodies require regular rest. Hence the importance of regularly disconnecting from situations in which we are mentally engaged.

" If you have too much time in the performance zone, you need more time in the recovery zone, otherwise you risk burnout."  Know your strengths and how to increase your energy levels. Get to know your "triggers" both at work and at home. Be acutely aware of your thoughts, for they influence our feelings and our responses.

Resilience is accessible to all of us and it is never too late to cultivate it. It gives us the edge and distinguishes those who survive and adapt from those who give up. Resilience involves choosing to be positive rather than negative.

" Resilience is a critical element in developing our capabilities as human beings. We need resilience to become all that we can become and to fulfill our potential in life." Rod Warner.
