Figuring Out a System (Learning the Art of Juggling)

By Karen Vally on 14 May 2019

As I write this blog, I am sitting on a bench surrounded by majestic mountains, leafy trees, beautiful shrubs and flowers and guinea fowl scurrying across the lawn. The sound of birds is music to my ears. Is this still a dream or am I really here to stay?

For the past few weeks, I have been reflecting on these 2 questions :

What makes each of us unique?

What is the golden thread that connects us?

I have come to the conclusion that our gifts, talents and strengths and the degree to which we apply them to our lives, make each of us unique. The golden thread that connects us, is our search for happiness and our attempts to avoid pain. Most of us know what it is like to feel happy and what it is like to feel sad. Life is a struggle, it ebbs and flows and our feelings change with those movements.

So how could we make our journey through life more comfortable? How could we improve our ability to cope with challenges?

What if we were to become crystal clear about what really matters and remain steadfastly committed to doing whatever it takes to follow through, despite how we are feeling?

When asked what really matters, the most common responses are air, water, food, warmth and a safe place to stay. Others are family, friends, people, pets, faith, health, money, nature, books, art, education, music, sport and entertainment. Digging deeper, some choose life itself, love, respect, peace, freedom, happiness, enthusiasm, courage, confidence, time, creativity, intelligence, gratitude, fulfillment, resourcefulness, productivity and spending time alone, as their most important things.

"You can't neglect your wife for four years and then say, ' Okay, now it's my wife's years.' Relationships don't work that way, and neither does your health or fitness. Figuring out a system so that the stuff you need to do all the time happens, even while you might be placing disproportionate focus on one thing, is pretty important. Otherwise, you'll be setting yourself up to be lonely and unhealthy in your future." Ben Silbermann, CEO of Pinterest.

Perhaps the solution lies in using our daily gift of 24 hours more effectively. Perhaps it lies in learning the art of juggling. What do you think?
